HARDCORE PROJEKTZ
If you do your homework and trace the history of breaks you'll find that it all starts in 1990 with Hardcore. Over fifteen years later, the sound of oldskool breaks is alive and well with a dedicated group of labels pushing this new blend of Hardcore sounds and new breakbeat methods and technology. We caught up with Darkus, head of the Hardcore Projektz label, for a chat on how the oldskool sound fits in with breaks today and what he's doing to let you know all about the sound you should've heard a long time ago...

They're a US-based breaks label that has been putting out some seriously heavy gear for over five years, including recent releases from Backdraft, DJ Quest and Baobinga. Prajna caught up with Rankin & Ceos back in spring 2005 for the info and some bullshitting. This chat was first posted on the old BP site, but go ahead and re-read it, this crew is definitely one to keep an eye out for.

PHRENETIC
The dictionary defines the word phrenetic as "excessively agitated; transported with rage or other violent emotion" - one could also apply that definition to the sound of cOntaX and Offkey, the two UK-based producers behind breaks duo Phrenetic. Their discog goes back to 1994, but they really hit their stride with releases on Mechanoise and Guerilla Tactics. Pulling no punches, this duo has been solid with each outing and are keeping alive the dark breakbeat sound with roaring basslines and eerie atmospherics.

NAPT
You can always dig it when someone comes out with a unique sound. NAPT have done just that, blending a hybridized breakbeat style with a straight-ahead dancefloor sensibility for results that are gaining them support across the board. A recent appearance on a "Fabric Live" comp, along with a radio show and singles on Plastic Raygun and Hardcore Beats means NAPT will be staying busy in 2005.

FREESTYLERS
After opening for Lenny Kravitz, playing "Top of the Pops" and rocking out Glastonbury, some artists may feel there's not much left to do. But not the Freestylers - they hooked up with the Against the Grain imprint and started knocking out some great breaks singles as "Raw as F**k". Now, with the July 5th release of the "Raw as F**k" full-length album and a tour in the works, Matt Cantor took some time out from an extremely hectic release schedule to chat...
